NBC5 Promotes Liz Strzepa to Weeknight News Co-Anchor

NBC5’s Liz Strzepa, who has held numerous positions with the station over nearly 10 years at NBC5, has been officially announced as NBC’s new main co-anchor. She will be sharing the desk weeknights with Brian Colleran at 5:00, 6:00, 10:00 and 11:00pm.

“I have been truly lucky to spend so much of my career in Vermont, Northern New York and New Hampshire,” says Strzepa. “When I was hired at NBC5, I never could have imagined 10 years later I would get this opportunity.” She began with serving as the station’s Upper Valley reporter in their then White River Junction newsroom location.

It wasn’t long before NBC5 recognized her potential, moving her to their Plattsburgh studio after Liz spent weeks covering the 2015 prison break at Clinton Correctional Facility. She was eventually moved to NBC5’s Colchester Bureau and has been stationed in Vermont ever since. Before serving as an anchor, she reported regularly in both Vermont and Northern New York for their 5:00, 5:30 and 6:00 newscasts.

“Liz Strzepa has earned this opportunity through her own hard work and dedication,” says NBC5 News Director Michael LaFlesh. “She has held nearly every on-air position in our newsroom, reporting in all three of NBC5’s bureau locations, and becoming one of NBC5’s most well-known and respected reporters and anchors. Her experience in our market and the connections she’s made in our communities will continue to be vitally important to our newsroom.”

Strzepa’s abilities were noticed beyond the walls of NBC5 studios as well, when in 2021 she received the Vermont Association of Broadcasters Rising Star Award, given to members of the state’s broadcast community who show an “extraordinary amount of passion and potential and will likely have a long and successful career in the industry.” She says the experience left her feeling motivated to become an even better journalist. “It’s hard to fully express how humbling it was to be
recognized by my peers and colleagues in that way. I want to make sure I continue to earn that privilege to serve our communities every day.”

Most recently, NBC5 chose Strzepa, along with Jack Thurston, to spearhead their new 4:00pm news show. “I’ve been reporting local news in Vermont for over two decades, and I’ve not seen a more steadfast and dependable journalist than Liz,” says Thurston. Strzepa’s new co-anchor, Brian
Colleran, agrees. “The experience and integrity she brings to NBC5 cannot be overstated. She has become a clear leader in our newsroom, and I look forward to sharing that stability and reliability with our viewers every night on the anchor desk.”

Having grown up and attended college in Massachusetts at UMass Amherst, Strzepa always thought her career would eventually lead her home. “Life had other plans, and it became very clear to me that Vermont was my new home.” She met her now husband, Trevor, a Vermont native who works for the State. The two just recently bought their first home together. “Having the chance to reach this kind of career milestone, while continuing to serve the communities that have welcomed me professionally, as well as personally, it’s more than I could have ever asked for, and I thank NBC5 and Hearst Television for the support they’ve given me and for trusting me to serve in this coveted position.”

Strzepa will continue to anchor the 4:00pm news with Jack Thurston on a temporary basis. Her promotion to the 5:00, 6:00, 10:00 and 11:00pm newscasts is effective immediately.
